Upstream water floods Moulvibazar
Heavy rain coupled with onrush of water from the hills in the upstream has triggered flash flood in vast areas of Kamalganj upazila under Moulvibazar district, rendering one thousand families marooned.
Water level of the Monu River was flowing about 85cm above the danger level yesterday, said Md Faizur Rob, executive engineer of Moulvibazar Water Development Board (WDB).
The embankments at ten points have already started breaking while 40 others areas of the embankments are under threat due to swelling water level but local WDB authorities are not taking any step for immediate repair work due to lack of budget for the purpose, officials said.
A big portion of Barlekha Sadar area, Gopalnagor, Judhapur, Karimpur, Suranandapur, Basudebpur, Jalalpur and Munshibazar areas under Kamalganj upazila are affected by flooding.
“Water from hilly areas started entering our home on Wednesday evening,” said Abdul Alim, 58, of Jalalpur village in Kamalganj upazila.
Md Jewel Ahmed, mayor of Kamalganj municipality, said, "Floodwater has entered many of the municipality areas. After we informed the WDB officials, they visited the areas but nothing has been done to check the situation."
Rafiqur Rahman, chairman of Kamalganj Upazila Parished, said, floodwater has entered eight villages in the upazila, affecting around 1000 families.
Thousands of families living along riverside have become anxious in fear of losing their croplands and homesteads but WDB officials have done nothing other than visiting the areas, he added.
Mahmudul Haque, upazila nirbahi officer of Kamalganj, said amid swelling of the river, most of the points of the river embankment have become risky.
Foizur Rob, executive engineer of Water Development Board, Moulvibazar, said floodwater submerged most of the areas in Kamalganj upazila.
Dhalai River's water was flowing above the danger level at Moulvibazar yesterday.
Amid swelling of river, ten embankments in Kulaura upazila of the district started breaking on Wednesday night, and so, around ten thousands families are now passing days amid fear of flooding in the nearby areas.
Control Room officials of WDB said the floodwater has started engulfing dwelling houses in the char areas under Sadar, Rajnagor and Kulaura upazila of the district.
Nojmul Haque, chairman of Kamarchak Union Parishad under Rajnagor upazila, said floodwater has entered many of the upazila, affecting around 100 families.
Bakhor Khan, chairman of Prithimpasha Union Parishad, and Abdul Basit Bachchu, chairman of Hazipur Union Parishad of Kulaura Upazila, said, 10 points of the embankments on the Monu River started breaking and 40 other points of the embankments have become risky. Abdul Basit Bachhu said WDB repaired the embankment at Hazipur one month ago but it started breaking on Wednesday.
Md Rafiqul Islam, chairman of Kamalganj Upazila Parishad, said he visited the affected areas and informed the higher authorities of the situation.
Md Foijur Rob, executive engineer of Moulvibazar WDB, said, "Now there is no budget for repairing embankments on the Monu River. We submitted a project to the higher authorities for repairing the embankments."
