Union declared free from child marriage
Harati union under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila has been declared free from child marriage.
This was announced at a meeting held on the premises of the union parishad office yesterday. Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Habibur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (SP) TM Mozahidul Islam, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shafiqul Islam, and Harati Union Parihsad (UP) chairman Sirajul Islam were present in the meeting, which was jointly arranged by two NGOs.
It was declared that no child marriage would be held in Harati from now, and stern action would be taken against anyone found guilty of arranging child marriage. The UP chairman and members, village police (gram police) and local elite will remain alert to prevent child marriage.
The DC said child marriage is a curse and a source of a family's discontentment. It has a bad impact on population growth and women's health in the society, and also causes untimely death of women.
Everybody should unite for removing the curse of child marriage for building a peaceful society, the SP said.
People from different villages of Harati union took an oath to prevent child marriage.
