Two teachers assaulted
Headmasters of two government primary schools were assaulted over formation of schools' managing committees in Ghatail upazila on Monday and the day before.
The victims are Akbar Hossain, headmaster of Baroipara Government Primary School, and Mahbubur Rahman, headmaster of Noornagar Government Primary School.
Speakers at a protest rally demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the assaulters of the headmasters.
Under the banner of Ghatail upazila unit of Bangladesh Primary School Teachers'
Association, hundreds of primary schoolteachers in the upazila joined the programme yesterday.
Among others, Akhtaruzzaman Khan and Sujat Ali Khan, president and general secretary of upazila unit of the association, headmasters Baset Karim and Humayun Kabir and Ghatail municipality Mayor Shahiduzzaman Khan spoke.
Mentionable, headmasters Akbar and Mahbubur were beaten by local criminals over formation of the schools' managing committees. They are now undergoing treatment at Ghatail Upazila Health Complex.
The victims filed two cases with Ghatail Police Station in this connection on Monday.
According to case statements, president candidate Azaharul Islam Raza of Bhabondutta village lodged a complaint with the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of irregularities over formation of the managing committee of Baroipara Government Primary School.
Following the complaint, assistant education officer in Ghatail JM Fuad went to the school on Monday morning to look into the matter.
However, Raza and his men beat headmaster Akbar Hossain during the inquiry and also ordered the education officer to submit the inquiry report in his (Raza) favour.
Meanwhile, an 11-member managing committee of Noornagar Government Primary School was formed on Sunday. Failing to get selected as president, candidate Babar Ali of the area and his men beat up headmaster Mahbubur Rahman.
GM Fuad, assistant education officer in Ghatail, said they are investigating the incidents of assault on the two headmasters.
