A clash between agitating transport workers and police is going on in Gabtoli bus stand area of Dhaka following arson attacks on a police box and a wrecker parked there.
On information, two firefighting units from adjacent area were attempting to reach the spot but were barred by the strikers, Farukul Alam, officer-in-charge of Darus Salam Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Chase and counter chase between transport workers and members of law enforcement agencies were going on in the area till filing of the report around 9:00pm.
The agitating transport workers set fire on the wrecker parked near the police box around 8:00pm without any instigation, said OC said.
The workers also blocked Gabtoli road by setting fire to tyres and ransacked some vehicles in the area, our correspondent reports from the spot.
Besides, the law enforcers lobbed several rounds of tear gas shells and charged batons at the agitating workers to bring the situation under control.
Additional law enforcers were deployed in and around the area.
Since this morning, transport workers took their protests to a bigger scale protesting conviction of two fellow drivers.
The death conviction of a trucker in Dhaka yesterday fueled the transport workers who were already on strike in Khulna division and helped it spread countrywide.
Meanwhile, visiting the spot, Awami League lawmaker Aslamul Haq urged the agitating transport workers to calm down and sit for talks.
But the workers denied the lawmaker’s call and were continuing their protest.
