Five girl students of a primary school in Chowgachha upazila of Jessore had to receive treatment for injuries as teachers beat them with bamboo sticks on Thursday.

The injured are Chumki Khatun, 10, Rity Khatun, 9, Swapna Khatun, 10, Sumi Khatun, 11, and Eity Parvin, 11, of Swaruppur Government Primary School in Chowgachha.

Fourth grader Chumki Khatun is undergoing treatment at a local clinic while the others were given primary treatment.

Chumki's left arm was broken, said a doctor at the clinic.

The girl's father Ruhul Amin lodged a complaint with Chowgachha Police Station yesterday.

“My daughter Chumki attended the International Mother Language Day programme at the school on February 21. Before the programme ended, she along with a few other students went to visit neighbouring relatives,” said the father.

“When they went to school on Thursday, teachers Panna Khatun and Rina Akhter beat them with a pair of sticks, causing them injuries,” he said.

Despite repeated attempts, the accused teachers could not be contacted for their versions as their cell phone remained off.

Nasrin Sultana, headmaster of the school, said, “The students were beaten up by their class teachers. It is nothing unusual as teachers can beat students for their good.”

Khandaker Shamim Uddin, OC of Chowgachha Police Station said, “We sent a police team to the spot for investigation after the father of an injured student made a complaint. The details will be known after they come back with reports.”

Chowgachha Upazila Primary Education Officer Belayet Hossain said, “I do not know of any such incident. I will look into the matter.”
