Tangail poetry festival begins

A three-day poetry festival began in Tangail town yesterday.

The fourth edition of the festival kicked-off at Shaheed Smrity Poura Udyan in the town with the slogan 'Samprodayeekota o jongibader biruddhye kobita' (Poetry against communalism and militancy).

Organised by Tangail Public Library, nearly 400 poets and authors from India and different parts of the country are taking part in the festival this year.

Tangail District Council Chairman Fazlur Rahman Khan Faruk, also Awami League district unit president, inaugurated the festival as chief guest.

Students from Bharateswari Homes performed the inaugural song "Aguner paroshmoni chhoao prane, a hridoy purno koro" at the inaugural ceremony of the festival.

Lawmaker Sanwar Hossain, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Khan Mohammad Nurul Amin, Indian poets Amrito Maiti, Syed Kawsar Jamal, Ranjit Das, Shyamol Kanti Das and poets Ali Imam, Al Muzahidi and Bulbul Khan Mahbub of Bangladesh also spoke  as special guests.

On the first day, a number of participants took part in poetry recitation competition in separate six sessions.
