Tangail man shown arrested in war crimes case
A special tribunal in Dhaka today showed a man arrested in a case filed over war crimes committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
Mahabubur Rahman, 69, a resident of Boiratiapara village in Mirzaganj upazila of Tangail, is accused of killing a philanthropist and his son during the country’s liberation war.
He has been detained on July 29 in a criminal case filed under Special Powers Act-1974 and is now in Tangail jail.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Anwarul Haque showed Mahabubur arrested following a petition moved by Prosecutor Rana Dasgupta.
Allowing prosecution’s prayer, the tribunal directed the jail authorities to produce Mahabubur before it on November 7.
Prosecutor Rana told the tribunal that the investigation officer of the case has already found Mahabubur’s involvement in two incidents of crimes, including the abduction and killing of philanthropist Ranada Prasad Saha, known as RP Saha, and his son Bhabani Prasad Saha in May 1971.
In the petition, Prosecutor Rana said that Mahabubur needs to be shown arrested in the criminal case and kept in jail, otherwise he may abscond after getting bail in the case.
The investigation of the case began on April 18, he added.
