Sitakunda raid: ‘JMB couple’ remanded
A Chittagong court today placed a couple on a five-day remand in a case filed for their suspected involvement in banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
The couple -- Jasim alias Jahirul Islam and Arzina alias Rajia Sultana-- was detained from a militant den in Purbo Amirabad area of Sitakunda on March 15.
Police produced the couple before the court of Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Shiplu Kumar Dey seeking 15-day remand.
After hearing, the court granted five-day remand for each for the sake of investigation, Moshiur Rahman, an inspector of the court, told our local correspondent.
According to police, Jasim has rented the houses -- “Sadhon Kutir” and “Chhayaneer” – at Sitakunda providing fake NIDs to the house owners.
On March 15, police conducted a drive at “Sadhon Kutir” in Amirabad area of Namarbazar and arrested the militant couple with a pistol, grenades and explosives.
After interrogation, police informed about the existence of another den at “Chhayaneer” of Premtala area and carried out operation codenamed “Assault- 16’ that left four militants and a child dead.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chittagong Nure Alam Mina, later, told the media that militants --Md Kamal Uddin and his wife Jobaida--who were killed during the raid at “Chhayaneer” were the brother-in-law and sister of Jasim.
They both hailed from Baisari of Naikhyongchhari upazila of Bandarban.
After the operation Assault-16, a total of four cases ---two in connection with recovering arms and explosive from ‘Sadhon Kutir’ and rest two with the charges of murder and possessing explosives at ‘Chhayaneer’--- were filed with Sitakunda Police Station.
Earlier, on March 17, the court granted 12-day remand each for Jasim and Arzina in the two separate cases filed with recovering arms and explosives from “Sadhon Kutir”, the court inspector said.
