SC stays bail for Sylhet, Habiganj mayors
The Supreme Court today stayed till January 2 next year the High Court orders that granted bail to suspended Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipal Mayor GK Gaus in two separate cases.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Md Nizamul Huq passed the order following two separate petitions filed by the government seeking stay on the HC orders of bail.
The apex court judge also sent the stay petitions to its full bench for hearing on January 2.
Ariful, also a BNP leader, and Gaus cannot get released from jail until the SC hearing on the government petitions, their lawyer Advocate M Masud Rana told The Daily Star.
The HC on December 11 granted them bail following two separate bail petitions filed by Ariful and Gaus in two separate cases filed under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
The case was filed against Ariful in connection with the incident of bomb blast at a public meeting at Dirai bazaar in Sunamganj on June 21, 2004. A Juba League activist was killed and 29 others were injured in the incident.
Ariful is the accused of a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908 over the killing of former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria.
The then opposition lawmaker and Awami League leader Kibria and four others including his nephew Shah Manzur Huda were killed in a grenade attack on a rally in Habiganj on January 27, 2005.
Two cases -- one for killing and the other for blasting bombs-- were filed in connection with the incident.
