Satkhira freedom fighter ‘beaten dead’, 4 held
A freedom fighter was allegedly beaten to death in Sadar upazila of Satkhira early today.
Abul Kalam Azad, 70, of village Ghona, succumbed after taking a beating at Satkhira Sadar Hospital while undergoing treatment there, our local correspondent reports.
Mushiur Rahman, district commander of Muktijoddha Command Council, acknowledged that he was a freedom fighter back in 1971.
“Ekramul Islam and his brother beat up my father after he had an altercation with them over a loan money on Monday evening,” alleged the victim’s son Tumin Alam.
He was rushed to the hospital around 10:00pm where he succumbed to his injury around 2:00am, said Dr Iqbal Mahmud, a duty doctor of the hospital.
His relatives said the patient had complained of chest pain, the doctor also said.
The victim’s elder son Aktarul Islam filed a murder case accusing seven people including Ekramul and his brothers, said Firoz Hossain Mollah, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station.
Four people have already been detained for their alleged involvement in the killing, the OC added. The detainees are, Mominur Rahman, Abdul Wadud, Md Jony Hossain and Munna Hossain.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
