‘Robber’ killed in Jhenidah ‘gunfight’ with cops
An alleged robber was killed in what police claimed to be a gunfight in Jhenidah early today.
The name and address of the deceased could not be known immediately, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.
The incident took place around 2:30am when police conducted raid at Katakhali in Maheshpur upazila as a gang of robbers was planning a robbery on a road by blocking it with tree timbers, said Aminul Islam Biplob, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur Police Station.
As soon as police van reached there, the alleged robbers opened fire and hurled crude bombs forcing police to retaliate with gunfire triggering a “gunfight” between them, police said.
At one stage, the deceased was caught in the line of the 10-minute firing and died on the spot. His cohorts managed to flee, OC Biplob added.
Two policemen who received injuries during the “gunfight” were taken to local upazila health complex, the OC said.
