One dies, 18 hurt as villagers clash
One villager was killed and 18 others were injured in separate clashes in two villages under Shailakupa upazila of the district yesterday.
In Debinagar village, a man was killed and six others of both sides sustained injuries in a clash between two groups of ruling party men.
The deceased was identified as Atiar Rahman Khan, 45, son of Mohammad Ali Khan of the village.
The names of the injured could not be known immediately. They have been admitted to Shailakupa health complex.
Police said a fierce clash took place between the supporters of two ruling party men, Atiar Rahman Khan and Shahjahan Mollah, over an affair with a woman. Both the groups were armed with sharp weapons.
Police opened fire to disperse the angry mob and bring the situation under control.
Sub-inspector of Ramchandrapur police outpost Ajoy Kumar said Atiar died on the spot.
In Shapkhola village, two groups of villagers locked in a clash yesterday over establishing supremacy in the area.
Twelve people of both sides were injured and some houses were vandalised during the clash.
The injured are Laltu Mondol, 50, Jashim Uddin, 22, Milon Hossain, 25, Ashraful Hossain, 22, Tito Shikdar, 45, Shimul Hossain,, 23, Razu Hossain,, 24, Swapan Mollah, 45, Suzayed Hossain, 60, Jahangir Hossain, 65, Razu Ahmed, 20, and Tupu Hasan, 35.
Locals said there was a longstanding conflict between acting chairman Faruk Hossain and ex-chairman Mofiz Uddin over establishing supremacy in the area.
As a sequel to the previous enmity, supporters of the two men had an altercation yesterday at a tea stall of the village. Later, they clashed with each other with locally made weapons.
