One arrested after 4 days
Police yesterday arrested a man for his alleged involvement in Wednesday's brutal torture on a couple belonging to a small ethnic community in Phulbaria upazila under the district.
The arrestee is Dukhiram Cooch, 45, of Hatilet Dublakhola village of Rangamatia union in Phulbaria, said Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbaria Police Station.
On Wednesday evening, village arbitrators shaved the heads of Laxmi Rani Cooch, 30, and her husband Koyes Cooch, 35, both day labourers of Hatilet Dublakhola village of Rangamatia union in Phulbaria, alleging Laxmi's relations with a man of the same area.
After making the couple walk around the village with shoes hung around their necks, the arbitrators also ordered them to pay a fine of Tk 40,000 by Monday.
A mob allegedly led by Kalimohan Barman and Naren Barman did the heinous act while Chandan Barman, Bimol Barman, Rupchand Barman, Poresh Barman and a few of their female relatives joined.
The arbitrators also beat them up with shoes in front of hundreds of villagers, Sekandar Akanda, member of Hatilet ward, quoted locals as saying.
Laxmi filed a case against 16 people including 12 named ones with Phulbaria Police Station on Sunday evening.
"Although Dukhiram was not named in the case he confessed to his involvement in the incident. He was produced before a Mymensingh court that sent him to jail today," OC Rifat Khan Rajib said.
