No headmaster in 352 primary schools
The posts of headmasters at 352 primary schools here are lying vacant for long, disrupting schooling and administrative work.
As many as 352 out of 1,024 government primary schools in the district are running without headmasters for long, said Molla Bokhtiar Rahman, assistant district primary education officer.
Besides, 227 of 4,432 posts of assistant teachers at the schools are lying vaccant, hampering academic activities much, he said.
Apart from this, assistant teachers are working as acting headmasters at some schools in absence of headmasters, said Bokhtiar.
During a recent visit to Fultala Government Primary School in Sadar upazila, this correspondent found only two teachers taking classes while three posts are lying vacant.
They have to maintain all six classes from pre-primary level to Class V every day and it is very difficult for them.
“I have to maintain more than one class in a period as there is shortage of teachers,” said Rita Hawlader, acting headmaster of the school.
Both academic and administrative activities at the school are greatly hampered as she has to go to the upazila and district offices for official purposes, said Rita.
Assistant teacher Aysha of Vajna Government Primary School in the upazila is serving as acting headmaster as the post of headmaster at the school is lying vacant for four years.
“I often go to upazila office or district office for administrative work and only two teachers have to run all six classes then. Only three teachers are working here against five posts,” said Aysha.
The education officer said they informed the higher authorities about the vacant posts several times but to no effect yet.
