Students vow to fight social menaces

Students under the banner 'Upasana' brought out a bicycle procession at Patikapara village in the district's Kaliganj upazila on Sunday as part of their awareness campaign against social menaces like dowry, child marriage, drug abuse and gambling.

With the slogan “Ekota, Satota, Dharmachar” (unity, honesty, religiosity), over a hundred students of different schools, colleges and universities took part in the procession that started from Sree Sree Radha Govinda Temple of Patikapara village and marched through the roads at five villages.

A discussion followed.

Speakers at the programme urged all to join fight against dowry, child marriage, drug abuse, gambling and different anti-social activities and practise green living for a peaceful society.

Since the formation of Upasana in 2017, the non-political students' platform has been involved in welfare activities including blood donation, giving stipend for education of poor and meritorious students and awareness campaigns, said Sumanta Kumar Roy, president of the organisation.

“Our members are active in greater Rangpur region and we are always ready to fight against social menaces and activities that go against our culture,” said Dipu Kumar Roy, secretary of Upasana.

“All should be honest and keep united for a better society. We are working for the purpose,” he said,

A 22-member central committee from Chaparhat village in Lalmonirhat runs this Hindu students' platform and work in different areas of Rangpur division with the help of their sub-committees, he said, adding that they have a plan to work across the country.
