School waterlogged for 4 months a year
Students of Uttar Gosaibari Government Primary School in Bogura's Sonatola upazila cannot play on their school ground as it remains waterlogged nearly four months a year.
Moreover, students and teachers of the educational institution have to wade across the water-logged compound of the school to attend their classes.
Minarul Islam, 36, a resident of Gosaibari village, said for the last four to five years floodwater enters the school ground every year and remain stagnant for nearly four months a year.
"For the last two to three years I have been cultivating fish in the waterlogged school ground during this time of the year," Minarul said, adding that they have been witnessing that students and teachers have been suffering immensely while attending their classes during the waterlogged situation.
The primary school was established in 1974.
Akib Islam, 11, a Class V student of the school, said, "During the rainy season, we have to wade through the water-logged compound to attend our classes and sometimes our dress gets wet."
"Our school have a large playground but we cannot play there as it remains waterlogged for couple of months every year," Akib said, adding that they have suffer for pure drinking water as the tube well remains under water most of the time.
Contacted, Farida Yesmin, head teacher of the school, said, "We have informed the matter to the upazila education officer to solve the problem, but it remains the same."
Rafiqul Islam, president of the school managing committee, said the situation arises in the last three years after people build their houses around the school and blocked its drainage system.
He said they need to fill up the school compound by dumping earth to overcome the trouble.
Sonatala Upazila Education Officer Rabindranath Saha said teachers should contact them with proper documents of their problems.
They have an emergency planning and development cell for the flood-hit or waterlogged school and they can allocate funds up to Tk 3 lakh.
