'Punish instigator of girl's suicide'

Local people formed a human chain in Panchagarh town on Sunday, demanding exemplary punishment of a youth who allegedly instigated a college girl to commit suicide at Amtala Kajipara village in Sadar upazila.  

HSC first year student Mukti Akhter, 17, daughter of Md Ashraful Islam, hanged herself on November 8, leaving a suicide note.

Villagers alleged that Majkurul Hasan, 24, of Dangapara village, developed an illicit relationship with the girl, saying he will marry her. As a result, she became pregnant.

Majkurul demanded dowry when Mukti put pressure on him to marry her.  Majkurul married elsewhere on November 6 as Mukti's family refused to give dowry due to their poverty. After the incident, the girl killed herself.
