MP aspirant Jamaat leader arrested

Detectives picked up two Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, including one independent aspirant for lawmaker from Mymensingh-6 (Phulbaria) constituency in the district on Friday night and early yesterday.

They are -- Prof Jasim Uddin, ameer of Jamaat's district unit, and Abdur Razzaq, the party's Phulbaria upazila secretary.

Jasim Uddin submitted nomination as an independent candidate for Mymensingh-6 constituency on November 28.

“A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police picked up my father from our business centre 'Poultry and Fish Feed' at Phulbaria town's main road around 1:30pm. That time he was discussing about the filing of his nomination with some party colleagues,” said Saad Bin Jasim, son of Prof Jasim.

“Earlier, police picked up Abdur Razzaq, a dentist, from his chamber at the upazila town's Shafi Market around 11:00pm.

“Soon after they were taken away, we lost contact with them. After failing to trace their whereabouts, I along with my two sisters and maternal uncle went to the DB office and found them there this evening,” said Saad.

Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of DB, said the two detained Jamaat leaders were being interrogated at Phulbaria Police Station as of filing this report around 6:30pm.

There is no case against Jasim but Abdur Razzaq is accused in several cases filed with the police station, he added.
