40-yr-old mahogany tree looted from upazila parishad premises
Unidentified miscreants have cut down and looted a 40-year-old mahogany tree worth Tk 50,00 from Barguna's Amtali Upazila Parishad premises on Thursday night amid Eid vacation.
Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Asaduzzaman lodged a written complaint with Amtali Police Station on Sunday noon.
According to the complaint, Amtali Upazila Parishad was formed in 1982. A number of trees of various species were planted in the Upazila Parishad premises at that time. Those trees have now turned into big trees.
A large mahogany tree, located near to the main gate, was a respite for the people coming to the parishad and that tree also enhanced the beauty of the premises. Hundreds of people who come to the Upazila Parishad every day used to sit and rest in the shade of that tree.
The office was closed on Thursday during the Eid-ul-Fitr. Taking the advantage of the closure of the office, a group of miscreants cut down the tree that night.
The cutting down of the tree has caused anger among the people of the area. They demanded that those involved in the incident be brought under the law and punished.
Visiting the spot on Sunday, it was seen that some leaves and some small baskets around the base of the tree were strewn.
Some witnesses said that 14-15 miscreants cut down the tree and loaded it on a vehicle late on Thursday night. "We did not approach them fearing consequence," they said.
Amtali Upazila Awami League General Secretary and also the municipal mayor Matiar Rahman said the incident was very unfortunate.
"If such thefts occur, no government asset is secure. Those involved with the incident must face the music," he said.
Amtali UNO Asaduzzaman said a written complaint was lodged with the Amtali Police Station on Sunday afternoon regarding the incident.
Amtali Upazila Parishad Chairman Golam Charwar Forkan said the UNO has been directed to take legal action against the perpetrators.
Amtali Police Station Officer-In-Charge Shah Alam Hawladar said, "I have received a complaint regarding the incident. Action is being taken subject to investigation."
