4 Meherpur BCL men sent to jail

A Meherpur court yesterday sent four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to jail in connection with a case filed on charge of assaulting on-duty policemen during a Victory Day programme in the town earlier in the day.

The four BCL men include Meherpur district unit BCL President Abdus Samad Bandhan and his three followers Ibrahim Hossain, Shishir Ali and Ashiq Sawdagor.

Meherpur Judicial Magistrate passed the order after police lodged a case with Meherpur Sadar Police Station against eight BCL leaders and activists in this connection and produced the four before the court in the afternoon, Meherpur Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Mustafizur Rahman said at a press conference at his office yesterday.

Police quoted witnesses as saying that BCL activist Ibrahim beat up fellow Suruj Ali following an altercation at Meherpur District Stadium during a Victory Day programme, organised by the district administration, in the morning.

As three on-duty policemen detained Ibrahim, a group of BCL men rushed in and tried to snatch Ibrahim from police custody.

At one stage, when Officer in Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Robiul Islam tried to control the situation the unruly BCL elbowed the OC.

Later, additional policemen detained Bandhan, Ibrahim, Shishir and Ashiq from the spot.
