‘Need free, empowered state organs for fair polls’
State organs need to be independent and empowered to hold a participatory and credible election, Transparency International Bangladesh’s Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said today.
He blamed the politicisation of the state machineries including law enforcement agencies behind the weakness which contribute to questionable elections in Bangladesh.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman was speaking at a report launching of the Brac Institute of Governance and Development on the state of governance in 2016 at Brac Inn in Mohakhali.
“After the ‘90’s, the state machineries were politicised and counter-politicised by ruling parties,” he said. “This has contributed to absence of good governance in the election system.”
Iftekharuzzaman also batted for a stronger role of the Jatiya Sangsad, judiciary and law enforcement agencies in curbing corruption in the society.
“Only Anti-Corruption Commission cannot fight corruption.”
Among others, renowned economist Professor Wahiuddin Mahmud and executive director of Brac Institute of Governance and Development, Dr Sultan Hafeez Rahman, spoke at the programme.
