N'ganj teacher humiliation probe deadline extended
The High Court today gave time till January 19 to the chief metropolitan magistrate in Dhaka for submitting the probe report before it on the public humiliation of Narayanganj school teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta in May last year.
Earlier on August 10 last year, the HC in suomoto rule ordered the CMM to conduct an inquiry in order to find out the offence committed in its entirety and identify the real perpetrators and to submit the probe report before it by November 3.
Today, the HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan gave the deadline to the CMM after Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Motaher Hossain Sazu prayed for two weeks’ time saying that CMM Sheikh Hafizur Rahman is now in Malaysia for his son’s treatment.
The probe is at the final stage, as the CMM has already recorded statements from 27 witnesses of the incident of humiliation of teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, he said, adding that he will complete the inquiry after returning to the country.
DAG Sazu told The Daily Star that the CMM had earlier sought time from the HC to complete the inquiry, but the court did not hear his time petition, as the chief justice had reconstituted the jurisdiction of the bench concerned.
In the second week of May last year, a video clip went viral on the social media, showing how the headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj was humiliated and forced to squat holding his ears in the presence of local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Salim Osman.
