Publisher murder attempt: ‘Mastermind’ on 6-day remand
A Dhaka court today placed Abdus Sabur alias Samad alias Raju on a six-day remand in a case filed in connection with an attempt to kill publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam passed the order after Detective Branch Inspector Bahauddin Farooki, also investigation officer of the case, produced Sabur before it on a ten-day remand prayer.
Earlier in the day, detectives claimed to have detained Sabur on charge of masterminding publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder and attempted killing Tutul of Shuddhoswar.
Jagriti Prokashoni owner Dipan was stabbed dead inside his office in Dhaka’s Aziz Super Market on October 31 last year. The same day, Tutul of Shuddhoswar was knifed in what appeared to be synchronised attacks on publishers of slain secularist writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
Avijit Roy, a freethinking writer, was brutally hacked to death in Dhaka University area on February 26, 2015, when he was coming out of Ekushey Book Fair. His wife was injured in the attack.
DMP’s briefing
Abdus Sabur, who left his home in Comilla two years back, provided important information regarding the killing of slain writer Avijit, DMP counter terrorism unit Chief Monirul Islam told journalists at a press briefing.
However, he has not yet confessed his direct involvement in Avijit murder, he said.
From madrasa background, Sabur had better grasp over Islamic knowledge than others, the police official said adding he misinterpreted Islam to motivate his subordinates.
He provided training on sharp weapon attack, but not on firearms, Monirul said.
“He was not a foot soldier in Dipan murder and attempted killing of Tutul. However, he provided training to foot soldiers of the attacks,” he said
