Malaysia detains 767 undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants
Malaysian Immigration police detained around 767 Bangladeshis among 936 illegal immigrants during a drive in the country’s coastal town Port Dickson of Malaysia on Sunday.
Apart from the Bangladeshis, there are 80 Pakistanis, 50 Indians, 22 Indonesians, 13 Sri Lankans, three Myanmareses, and one Nepali among the detainees, reports the New Straits Time quoting Malaysian state news agency Bernama.
“Some of the detainees do not have legal documents for residing in Malaysia and some are illegally staying in the country even after their visa period expired,” Negeri Sembilan Immigration Director Hapzan Hossaini said.
The detainees are aged between 20 and 50, he said adding that they were detained for various offences, including falsifying travel documents and overstaying in the country.
Recently, Malaysia government launched a re-hiring programme giving the illegal foreign workers opportunities to enroll as legal citizens. However, a few numbers of illegal immigrants took part in the programme.
Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur couldn’t confirm the arrest of its 767 nationals yet.
Around 4,00,000 Bangladeshis are legally working in different sectors while around 2,00,000 others are working without valid documents.
