Kushtia Jubo League leader held in police assault case
Police yesterday arrested Abul Kasem Joardar, president of Mirpur upazila unit of Jubo League in a case filed for assaulting two on-duty policemen on July 29.
Police said Kashem had an altercation with a pineapple vendor at Mirpur Bazar over the price of the fruit on July 29. At one stage, he started to beat up the vendor.
Seeing the incident, Osman Zaman, a sub-inspector (SI) of Mirpur Police Station, along with a constable went to the spot and tried to prevent Kashem from beating the vendor.
But Kashem and his followers attacked the two on-duty policemen too and beat them up in the market, said Abu Bakar Siddique, Kushtia additional superintendent of police.
SI Osman filed a case with the police station against Kashem and four Jubo League activists the same evening. On secret information, police raided Kashem's house in the town around 4:00pm and arrested him.
Away in Rajbari, law enforcers on Sunday night arrested a Jubo League leader in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district on charge of hurling bombs at five shops at the upazila headquarters on the night of July 17.
The arrestee is Seraj Mondol, 37, organising secretary of the upazila unit of Jubo League.
Police said Dibalok Kundu, one of the shop owners, lodged a case with Pangsha Police Station the same night, accusing some unnamed people for throwing bombs on five shops at the Upazila Market.
Police investigated the matter and detained Seraj, also younger brother of Pangsha Upazila Parishad Chairman Farid Hossain Wadud, suspecting his involvement in the attack, said Iqbal Hayat, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Police yesterday produced Seraj before a Rajbari court that sent him to jail, the OC added.
