JU suspends 5 BCL men over beating journos
Jahangirnagar University authorities have suspended five Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of the university unit for different terms after a probe committee found their involvement in beating up two university correspondents.
The JU syndicate made the decision with the vice chancellor Prof Farzana Islam in the chair last night after receiving a report from the committee that the university formed to investigate the incident, reports our JU correspondent.
BCL activists Mohitosh Roy Titu of history has been suspended for two years, Ikram Uddin Omi of marketing and Iqram Nahid of statistics for six months, Sharif Hossain Laskar of anthropology for two years and Riyajul Islam of Bangla for four months. Riyajul was also fined Tk 5,000.
Titu is religious affairs secretary of BCL’s JU unit Omi an assistant secretary while Iqram, Laskar and Riyajul are activists.
The BCL men were also declared ‘unwanted' on the campus by the university authorities during the punishment period.
At the same time, another student Bayejidur Rahman of Botany department was also warned as allegations were brought against him as well.
On June 4, some BCL activists led by Laskar assaulted Abu Raihan, a JU correspondent of an online news portal over a previous feud, while he was going to his relative’s house near Bismail area, campus sources said.
Shafiqul Islam, JU correspondent of online news portal bdnews24.com, was also injured in another attack by a group of BCL activists on June 8 while he was trying to rescue a young woman from an alleged abductor on June 8.
Meanwhile, JU Journalists' Association declared their two-day blockade of the registrar building to press their demands.
The punishment period has been started from June 26 this year, confirmed JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique.
