Journo assaulted
A journalist was assaulted by some miscreants in Kaliganj upazila of the district on Sunday night.
They also took away the newsman's camera and laptop from him, said Kaliganj police.
A complaint was filed with the local police station, accusing seven people, including the son of a union parishad (UP) member, in connection with the incident.
The victim is Niaz Ahmed Shipon, 28, Kaliganj upazila correspondent of Bangla daily Khola Kagoj, and son of Hazrat Ali of Tushbhandar village.
He is now undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex, said Maqbul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.
A gang of 7 to 8 led by Samiul Islam, son of Dalgram UP member Kabez Ali, beat him mercilessly when he was returning home, said the journalist.
They also took away the camera and laptop but failed to snatch his motorbike, he said.
“I published a report over a disputed land last month. The incident took place on Sunday night when I was returning home after covering another land related issue at Dalgram village,” said Shipon.
Refuting the allegation of assaulting the journalist by his son, the UP member said there was a longstanding conflict between him and the journalist over a land.
