Impeachment of SC Judges: SC to hear govt plea Feb 8
The Supreme Court today fixed February 8 for hearing the government’s appeal against a High Court verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution which empowered the parliament to remove a SC judge for incapacity or misconduct.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date as the appeal was included in the cause list of the Apex Court for its hearing.

The Supreme Court said the full bench of this court will hold hearing on the appeal on February 8.
Following a writ petition, the High Court on May 5 last year declared the 16th amendment to the constitution illegal.
The High Court, however, gave permission to the government to directly move an appeal before the Supreme Court against its verdict.
The government yesterday filed the appeal with the apex court challenging the High Court verdict.
