Hasina greets new British PM May
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today greeted Theresa May for her appointment as prime minister of United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and her most deserving election as the leader of the Conservative Party.
“As a woman Prime Minister, it is more heartening for me to see you leading the United Kingdom,” she said in her congratulatory message to the new UK leader.
In her letter to Theresa May, Sheikh Hasina said relations between Bangladesh and United Kingdom have been mature, strong and enduring.
These are based on shared values of democracy, freedom and human rights, rule of law, secularism as well as common and mutually beneficial interests,” she said added that Bangladesh is proud of the presence and contribution of its vibrant community in the United Kingdom. “They have further strengthened our ties.”
Prime Minister Hasina said she is happy to note that Bangladesh and the UK are working in partnership for strengthening the democratic ethos, empowering the vulnerable, countering terrorism and extremism, addressing the impacts of climate change among other global challenges of our time.
“I firmly believe that under your able and dynamic leadership, the existing excellent relations between our two friendly countries would continue to grow with fresh initiatives exploring new areas of cooperation and thereby achieving stronger partnership in the day’s ahead,” she said.
She told Theresa May that she would agree that there is scope for further development in their bilateral relations through trade, investment, education and knowledge-sharing.
Hasina invited the new British Prime Minister to visit Bangladesh in the near future at a mutually convenient time and see herself the overall progress made by Bangladesh, particularly through mainstreaming and empowering women.
“I am confident that your visit would infuse further impetus to our relations and take them to a greater height,” she added.
The Bangladesh prime minister wished her counterpart’s good health, long life and happiness as well as peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Great Britain and the Northern Ireland.
