Gunfight over fishing in water body leaves 2 dead
Two people were killed and 10 others hit by bullets during a gunfight between two rival groups over fishing in Dulain water body at Batumara village in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet district on Saturday evening.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Khalique, 50, of the village and Sheikh Farid Miah of Nowagaon village in the upazila. Both were security guards of the water body.
The injured were admitted to Companiganj Upazila Health Complex and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Police said there was a longstanding dispute between Abdul Haque and Turab Ali of the village over capturing Dolain Beel.
Locals said the clash ensued when the supporters of the two groups went to the water body for catching fish at around 7:00pm.
The two groups used firearms during the clash, leaving the two guards dead and 10 others from both sides injured.
On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups. They recovered the bodies and sent them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
None was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
