Govt won’t shut WhatsApp, Viber now
Bangladesh government has no plans to shut voice call applications like WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat and Imo now, said State minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim today.
She made the remark at her secretariat office while talking to the journalists in view of confusion over telecom regulator’s plan to curb voice calls through messenger to raise its revenue.

“Government has decided to frame guidelines to stop illegal call termination through VoIP that has cut the number of international incoming calls,” she said.
But the communication applications will continue operations as usual, she added.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood on Friday said that BTRC is going to develop guidelines for using communication applications by two or three months.
He said the communication applications were also responsible for the decline in international call termination via the legal channel.
