Vessel strike: Govt-owners meeting ends without decision
A meeting between government officials and water vessel owners that was convened aiming to end the ongoing deadlock situation in waterways transport ended without any solution.
Operations of passenger and cargo vessels in many places remain halted since Tuesday midnight as water transport workers went on an indefinite work abstention.

Officials of the Department of Labour sat with vessel owners at its conference room to discuss the issue around 11:00am.
“In the meeting, the owners placed some proposals. We are scrutinizing the proposals. We will separately sit with workers again to solve the problem,” said SM Ashrafauzzaman, director of the Department of Labour.
Water transport workers went on indefinite work abstention across the country to press home their 15-point demands including --a minimum monthly wage of Tk 10,000 for workers, increase in overtime pay, festival bonuses and other benefits, ensuring security and maintaining navigability on waterways.
Currently, the minimum wage of a worker is Tk 3,900, they said.
Earlier on Wednesday night, officials of the Department of Labour convened a meeting with the workers and owners to discuss the issue. But the meeting bore no fruit as owners skipped it citing that they would not sit with workers.
