Girl takes own life under stalker's threat

A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide on Monday following a threat by a stalker to spread objectionable pictures or videos of the victim on internet.

The deceased was Laboni Akhter, 16, daughter of Siddik Khan of Barai village in Sadar upazila. She appeared in this year's SSC examinations from Khan Bahadur Awlad Hossain High School.

Her mother Suraiya Akhter filed a case with Sadar Police Station against Roman Mia, 20, for his alleged involvement in provocation of her daughter's suicide.

According to the case statement, Roman, son of Abul Kalam of Purbo Dasra Bhaoipara village, used to stalk the girl on her way to school.

Roman used to take money from Labani for drinking liquor by threatening the girl to spread her objectionable photos or videos on internet.

On Monday morning, Roman asked for money by calling her daughter 52 times on her cellphone, said the victim's father Siddik.

To meet his demand, Laboni asked for Tk 1000 from her mother. But her mother refused to give the money.

After failing to collect money, Laboni took her life by hanging herself for fear of spread of objectionable photos or videos on the internet.

Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Rakibuzzaman said they are trying to arrest the accused.
