Govt tries to erase Zia’s name: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that the countrymen will not accept the government’s move to remove the grave of the party founder Ziaur Rahman from the parliament area.
“The government wants to erase the name of Ziaur Rahman carefully. It is a conspiracy and we will never accept the government’s hasty decision,” Fakhrul said while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at Zia’s grave in Dhaka.
Last year, Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain told the House that Chandrima Udyan, and the sites of the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, and the Planning Commission were parts of Kahn's original design where no space had been allocated for graves.
BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and six others were buried in the complex area.
The government brought the original design made by the world famous architect Louis I Kahn of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from Pennsylvania University’s archive in the US to make the move effective.
“Motive of bringing the original design of the parliament complex is to erase the name and sign of Ziaur Rahman,” he said.
The efforts will go in vain as the countrymen will never accept the government decision, Fakhrul said.
“The spirit of the Liberation War has been exiled from the country. And freedom fighters are also repressed and oppressed by the government deliberately,” he alleged.
No possibility of fair polls in NCC: BNP
Responding to a query about Narayanganj City Corporation elections, Fakhrul said there is no possibility to hold a free and fair poll in the city under the incumbent election commission.
“The incumbent election commission is incapable of holding an acceptable election in the NCC,” he added.
“Despite this, we are going to participate in the election for the sake of democracy and to reach to the people on this occasion,” he said.
Terming the government as “isolated from people”, he also alleged that the ruling Awami League is hatching a conspiracy to keep BNP leaders away from politics.
Fakhrul along with a good number of leaders and activists visited Zia’s grave marking the founding anniversary of the party’s front organisation Jatiyatabadi Muktijuddher Projonmo.
