Bystander shot dead in Brahmanbaria clash

An innocent bystander was shot dead in Nabinagar upazila of the district during a clash on Sunday between two rival groups of Raipura upazila of Narsingdi over last union parishad (UP) election.

Two unidentified people were also injured in the clash at Meghna river's Char-Lapang Ghat under Nabinagar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Sarkar, 29, son of Almas Sarkar of Char-Lapang village of Nabinagar upazila.

The clash began at Char-Lapang Ghat when armed people belonging to the group of Faruk Mia attacked the people of Zafar Mia of Mirzachar village in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district.

The clash coincidentally happened when the Narsingdi police were raiding the Char-Lapang village to arrest the people of Zafar Mia who were facing warrant for arrest. The people took shelter at the village to avoid arrest.

Shamim was shot as the groups were chasing each other. He was rushed to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

The groups filed cases against each other with Narsingdi court.

Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Iinvestigation) Raju Ahmed said the body was sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. But none filed case in this regard.
