Business hit hard as truck, lorry strike continues in northern districts
A total of 120 fruit-laden trucks, which were imported from Bhutan, remain stuck at Burimari land port in Lalmonirhat due to an indefinite strike enforced by truck, covered-van and tank lorry workers in 16 northern districts for the second consecutive day today.
The transport owners and workers went on the strike in 16 northern districts of the country yesterday to press home their seven-point demand including “harassment and extortion” by police on highways, reports our Natore correspondent.
Mostarul Islam, president of Truck-Covered Van-Tank lorry-Long vehicle-Transport Agency Owners and Workers Unity Council, said that they raised the issue many times but it was not settled by the authorities concerned.
“We will sit with the leaders of the transport owners and workers this afternoon on this issue,” Bijoylal Talukder, superintendent of police in Natore, said.
Ruhul Amin, convener of clearing and forwarding agencies’ association of Burimari land port, told our Lalmonirhat correspondent that if the strike is not withdrawn in 24 hours, importers will suffer a huge loss.
