Bumper mug bean yield makes farmers happy
Farmers in Patuakhali and Barguna districts are happy with bumper production of mug bean and fair prices of the produce in the local markets during the on-going harvesting season.
According to the district agriculture extension offices around 1.16 lakh hectares of land were brought under mug bean cultivation in the two districts this year.
Farmer Joynal Abedin said favourable weather, low fertiliser price and timely rain are the reasons for good yield this year, which is also gradually encouraging many growers to cultivate mug bean in recent days.
Patuakhali Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Deputy Director (DD) Hridayeshwar said a total 74,807 hectares of land were brought under mug bean cultivation in all eight upazilas of the district this year.
Meanwhile, mug bean was cultivated in around 42,000 hectares in Barguna, DD Shahinur Azam Khan of Barguna DAE said.
Farmers got a bumper yield of mug bean this season due to favourable weather condition since the start of cultivation in December.
While visiting different areas of the two districts this correspondent saw farmers are busy collecting ripe mug bean from their fields.
“I cultivated mug bean in one and a half acres of land at a cost of Tk 4,000 this year, farmer Abdul Aziz of Badarpur village in Patuakhali Sadar upazila said, adding that he already sold four maunds of his produce at Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,400 per maund.
Atahar Matubbor, 50, of the village, said, 'I cultivated mug bean on two acres of land this year and hope that I will get around 10 maunds of bean.'
Besides, many women in different villages were seen engaged in picking mug bean at the fields and get one-fifth portion of the item as their wages.
One of the labourers Khadija Begum, 40, said she can collect 15 to 20 kg mug bean in a day.
