Bridge subsidence cuts rail links with Sylhet for 10 hrs
Train communications from Sylhet with Dhaka and Chittagong were restored yesterday after 10 hours of disruption following the subsidence of a rail bridge hit by a heavy downpour in Srimangal upazila of the district.
The authorities suspended train services as the heavy downpour that started around 2:00am damaged the railway tracks in Jankichhara area, said Rustom Alo Fakir, stationmaster of Bhanugachh Rail Station.
The Dhaka-bound Kalni Express and the Jayantika Express remained stranded at Sylhet Railway Station following the halt of train services.
They were scheduled to leave Sylhet around 6:40am and 8:20am respectively, said, Md Abdul Razzak, station manager of Sylhet Railway Station.
Besides, the Sylhet-bound Udayan and Upobon expresses from Chittagong and Dhaka were also stranded at Shayestaganj station in Habiganj, he added.
Apart from this, two freight trains from Chittagong and Dhaka had to wait at Shayestaganj until 9:40am.
On completion of the track repairs, the train services resumed at noon, said Shakhawat Hossain, assistant engineer of Srimangal Railway Station.
