BCL faction observes half-day hartal
A half-day hartal called by a factional group of Bangaldesh Chhatra League (BCL) was observed in Sarishabari upazila town yesterday.
The shutdown was enforced protesting a newly-formed BCL committee of the upazila unit which was declared on Monday noon.
Shops and business establishments remained closed during the hartal hours from 8:00am to 12:00pm while no vehicles were seen plying in the town.
Soon after the newly formed committee was declared, a portion of deprived BCL leaders and activists led by Bazlur Rahman, who was president candidate of the committee, and KM Sohel, former president of the unit, went berserk, said party sources.
The agitating group blocked Jamalpur-Sarishabari road for about nine hours from 12:00 noon and set fire to a CNG-run-auto-rickshaw at Sarishabari bus stand in the afternoon, said police.
Around 5.00pm, the group swooped on Krishna Kumar Roy, driver of Mymensingh-bound Dhaleshwari train from Bangabandhu Bridge (east) and injured him at Sarishabari railway station.
As a result, the train had to halt for about one hour at the station, said Delwar Hossain, master of railway station.
A case was filed against 100 people for creating anarchy and causing damage, said Rezaul Islam Khan, officer-in-charge of Sarishabari Police Station.
