B'baria BCL man arrested with ransom money
Police arrested a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist with ransom money and rescued a Saudi Arabia expatriate from his captivity on Saturday.
The arrestee, Rezaul Karim Rana, 26, son of Mizanur Rahman of Dakkhin Mourail of Brahmanbaria town, is a member of the district unit of BCL, said police.
“The victim, Shafiqul Islam was going to Kautali area from the town on Saturday noon when three men on a motorbike waylaid him near the residence of the superintendent of police and posed as Detective Branch (DB) men. That time another man on a motorbike posed as a senior DB official,” goes the statement of the case filed by Shafiqul's elder brother Jahirul Islam.
“The abductors took him to a nearby abandoned house, beat him mercilessly, snatched away Tk 20 thousand from his possession and demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom for his release. Shafiqul phoned his cousin Monirul Islam to manage the money and the kidnappers asked Monir to come with money to Zila Eidgah Maidan at Kazipara of the town.
“Monir informed Brahmanbaria Sadar police who kept waiting near the spot. Police caught Rana while he was taking the money and rescued Shafiqul,” the case says.
Rana's cohorts managed to flee.
The alleged cohorts, district unit BCL assistant secretary Anik Paul, 26, son of Ashit Paul of Purbo Paikpara, activist Saiful Islam Shanto, 23, son of Ahid Mia of Purbo Medda area, and Injamul Haque Pavel, 25, son of Nannu Miah of Purbo Paikpara of the district town, were also made accused in the case.
Rana was sent to jail through a court on Sunday, said Sub-inspector Md Mizanur Rahman of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, investigation officer of the case.
