Barapukuria graft case: No legal bar to continue trial of Khaleda
The Supreme Court today cleared the way for lower court to continue the trial proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Barapukuria coalmine graft case.
A four-member bench of Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by Khaleda challenging a High Court verdict that cleared the way for running the trial proceedings of the case.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar on the lower court to run the trial proceedings of the case following the SC order.
The HC, on September 17 last year, rejected the petition filed by Khaleda challenging the legality of the trial proceedings of the case against her.
Later on, Khaleda filed a leave to appeal petition with the SC challenging the HC verdict.
After concluding hearing on the leave to appeal petition, the apex court fixed today for passing order on it.
ACC filed the case, accusing Khaleda and 15 others of causing a loss of Tk 159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding a contract for the operation of Barapukuria coalmine to a Chinese company abusing power.
