Bangladesh urges UN Security Council to act against Israeli settlements
Bangladesh today urged the Security Council of the United Nations to consider working on a resolution against illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Addressing the Council during an Open Debate, Ambassador Masud Bin Momen, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN, said that continued Israeli settlements posed the biggest challenge to resuming the Middle East Peace Process.
The permanent representative reiterated the call for a peaceful, just and durable solution to the Palestine-Israeli conflict. He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for the rights of the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspiration for an independent state.
He further called upon the international community to press Israel to put an end to its systematic violation of international humanitarian law in the occupied territories.
Expressing concerns over the nearly ten-year long Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip affecting two million Palestinians, Momen flagged Bangladesh’s support for a proposal to mark the fiftieth year of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories by declaring 2017 as the “International Year to End the Occupation”.
