Assault on govt official, 2 held

A court here sent two people to jail on Monday in connection with a case for physically assaulting a government official in Mathbaria upazila on Sunday. 

The arrestees are Abdul Gaffar, president of Hazi Gulshanara Orphanage in the upazila, and Mostofa Mahmud, a teacher of the orphanage home.

The victim, Md Akhlakur Rahman, Mathbaria upazila social welfare officer, said, “Although 41 orphans reside at the orphanage, Gaffar has been withdrawing government allocations against 101 orphans.”

A probe committee led by Mathbaria Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Sohag Howlader conducted an investigation in this regard and found the allegation to be true.

On Sunday, Gaffar went to his office and became angry when he did not allow him to withdraw the money, the officer alleged, adding that at one stage Gaffar hit him on the head while his associates beat him mercilessly.
