6 dredgers burnt in mobile court drive

A mobile court in separate drives on Monday destroyed six dredgers when those were being used for illegal sand lifting from Dhaleshwari and Elongjani rivers in Tangail Sadar upazila.

The court led by Sadar upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sukhamoy Sarker, also executive magistrate, conducted the day-long drives in Charabari and Porabari areas.

During the drive the court seized two dredgers, owned by Porabari UP member Rokeya Begum and Rubel Miah of Baghil Kestopur area, near Elongjani river in the morning and burnt them, locals said.

The court conducted another drive along Dhaleshwari river bank in the afternoon and seized four more dredgers, owned by former Katulee UP chairman Sumon Dewan from there.

The law enforcers later burnt those machines on the spot.

Meanwhile, the court seized another dredger abandoned at a field near Porabari Bazar and kept the machine under Porabari UP Secretary Liakat Ali's custody.

Executive Magistrate Sukhamoy Sarker said they conducted the drives against illegal sand lifters following complaint from the locals and said they warned continue such drives in future.
