3 ‘extortionists’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’
Three alleged extortionists were killed in a “gunfight” with police in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early today.
The deceased are Tuhin Ali, 21, son of Fakir Mohammad; Tajmul Ali, 27, son of Altaf Hossain; and Mohibul Islam, 24, son of Chand Ali of Bholadanga in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
The “gunfight” took place in Mothmura area around 3:00am when a gang of criminals was planning for extortion from a brick field, Akram Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station, told our Kushtia correspondent.
“As police reached the brick kiln, they asked the criminals to surrender,” OC said.
But the criminals opened fire targeting the law enforcers that prompted police to fire back, triggering a half-an-hour-long gunfight, the OC said.
After the gang fled the scene, police found three bullet-riddled bodies lying on the ground, the police official said.
Six police personnel were also injured during the “gunfight”, the OC added.
A pistol, a Light Gun, two crude bombs and two swords were recovered from the scene.
“All the three deceased are listed robbers,” the OC said.
