24 ruling party men land in Dinajpur jail
A Dinajpur court yesterday sent 24 ruling party men to jail in a case for assaulting the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur in October, 2014.
Court Sources said the accused are members of the upazila units of Awami League, Swechchhasebak League and Chhatra League (BCL).
They appeared before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in the afternoon and sought bail. Judge Gopal Chandra rejected their bail prayers and sent them to jail. Four other accused in the case were granted bail.
A group of the ruling party men attacked the then UNO Md Syed Farhad Hossain on October 1 because he suspended recruitment of night guards for 36 primary schools in the upazila following allegation of irregularities. They also vandalised three rooms, including the chamber of the UNO.
The UNO sustained injuries in the attack and took treatment at Rangpur Combined Military Hospital (CMC).
Abdur Rahman, office superintendent at the UNO office, filed a case with Nawabganj Police Station on October 2, 2014, accusing 50/60 people.
On October 2, police arrested upazila AL activists Md Abdul Mannan and Md Alam Mia in connection with the case.
On October 4, police arrested Md Ashraful Islam, 36, president of upazila Swechchhasebak League, Moazzem Hossain, activist of Swechchhasebak League and Ruhul Amin, BCL activist.
Syed Farhad Hossain filed a first information report with the police station on October 4, accusing 29 AL, BCL and Swechchhasebak League leaders and activists of attacking him and vandalising his office on October 1.
