CHITTAGONG
A gang of robbers reportedly swooped on a team of plain-cloth Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members, who were patrolling Nizampur area of Mirsarai on Dhaka-Chittagong highway by a microbus around 2:00am.
The “bandits” opened fire and punctured one of the tyres of the Rab’s microbus, prompting the elite force to fire back triggering the “gunfight”, said Chandan Debnath, assistant director of Rab-7.
Three of the robbers came in line of the fire and died on the spot, the Rab official said.
Two Rab men also suffered injuries during the incident, he added.
Three foreign pistols and two one-shooter guns were seized from the spot, the Rab official said.
KUSHTIA
Two alleged robbers were killed in another “gunfight” with police on Kushtia-Pabna highway in Mirpur upazila.
On information that a gang of eight to 10 robbers was preparing for committing robbery, local police conducted a drive in Gobindgunia point on the highway, said Kazi Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station.
Sensing presence of police, the robbers opened fire and hurled several crude bombs on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate triggering a gunfight, the police official added.
At this, bullet-hit bodies of the two robbers were recovered from the spot while their cohorts managed to flee the scene, the OC said.
Police also seized a pistol, two unexploded bombs, two swords and two bullets.
The bodies were sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
