12 Bangladeshis back from Indian jail

Twelve Bangladeshi people returned home on Saturday night through Benapole check post after serving one and a half years in an Indian prison.

Indian police handed them over to Benapole check post immigration police at 9:00pm.

Benapole Police Immigration OC Tarikul Islam said eight men and three women, with one child, had illegally entered Indian territory two years back without valid documents through Jessore border point.

Later, Indian police arrested them from Medenipur in West Bengal in India. A case was filed against them and an Indian court sentenced each of them to one and a half years imprisonment for illegally crossing the border without valid documents.

The Indian government returned them following exchange of letters between the home ministries of the two countries.

Benapole Port Police Station OC Apurbo Hasan said they handed the returnees over to their respective families through Women Lawyers' Association and Rights Jessore.
