10 hurt as rival mayoral candidates' men clash
At least 10 people were injured when supporters of rival mayoral candidates clashed in Biral municipality early yesterday on the eve of today's election,police said.
Of the injured, Maruf Akter, 38, son of late Mohsin Ali, Helal Uddin, son of Moazzem Hossain, and Shamsul Haque, 42, son of Abdul Momin, are being treated at Biral Upazila Health Complex while Abul Kalam, 42, son of Munnaf Mia, is being treated at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital.
The others took primary treatment at Biral Upazila Health Complex.
Witnesses said supporters of Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate Sabujar Rahman and his rival Shafiqul Azad Moni, a rebel mayoral candidate, also organisational secretary of Biral upazila AL, locked in an altercation at Brahmapur area at around 1:00am over election campaign in the area. Later, a clash took place between supporters of the two candidates, which left 15 people injured.
A team from Biral Police Station rushed to spot and brought the situation under control. Tension was high in the area after the clash.
Officer-in-Charge Abdul Majid said the situation is under control.
