Coast guard foils illegal migration attempt
Bangladesh Coast Guard early yesterday seized a Malaysia-bound engine-run wooden trawler and detained 17 Bangladeshis, including a human trafficker, from it in Moheshkhali channel near Najirartek of Cox's Bazar.
The illegal migrants, hailing from Narsingdi, Khulna, Satkhira, Jhenidah, Sirajganj, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, were handed over to Cox's Bazar Model Police Station following the detention . Coast guard says the trafficker, Arif, 30, of Cox's Bazar's Kutubdia upazila, took Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000 from each person to get them into Malaysia.
On August 20, another 30 Bangladeshis were detained by the coast guard from Bakhali point of the channel.
On the fourth of the same month, another trawler sank near Samity Para of Najirartek, say police and locals. Only around 14 of the 29 people on board were found to have swam to safety while a body was found floating in the locality the next day, they added.
